Isha Fofana is exhibiting at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris
As a part of the “Africa Week” celebrations at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris Isha Fofana – also known as “Mama Africa” – presents some of her artworks at an international exhibition. The exhibition will take place from May, 27th to 31st, 2013. Isha is representing The Gambia with five of her impressive paintings. Thanks to Adelle M. Sock, member of the Gambian Mission at the UNESCO in Paris, Isha got the chance to present her inspiring art at the centre of the worldwide most important cultural organization – the UNESCO. “It will be another milestone added to my international career. I’m very proud to get the chance showing my artworks at such a key location and – of course - to represent once again my country. I like to thank everyone helping me to make this opportunity happens”, said the renowned Gambian artist.
Isha Fofana will face a fruitful challenge with some of the best African artist’s whiles exhibiting her large-sized paintings at the UNESCO headquarters in the French capital. “Just like an artistic explosion, in her artwork Isha Fofana gives vent to all her suppressed thoughts, dreams and feelings. In her paintings, Isha Fofana uses her social and cultural background to express herself artistically. She combines her experience from her childhood with her ethnical roots in African traditions and the new artistic freedom gained in the western world. However, the way she is painting and using the canvas is markedly original and peculiar and therefore enormously powerful and contemporary. With her expressive technique, she creates passionate and powerfully contrasting paintings which rise to unexpected sensual pleasures…” lauds Dr. Adam Öllers, director of the museums in Aachen/Germany, Ishas creative work.
In 2008 Isha Fofana has returned home to The Gambia after an almost ten year international career abroad. During her time in Europe she had many exhibitions, amongst them, the UNESCO music awards given to Youssou N \\\' Dour/Senegal and Oumou Sangaré/Mali. Her gallery in Germany was a cultural centre for people interested in arts and culture from Africa. After an audience at the Vice President of The Gambia, Isha Fofana decided to return home to support her country with her talent and knowledge. Therefore, she founded the non-profit cultural institution called “Mama Africa” and built up the “Mama Africa - women’s museum & art centre” at Batokunku/The Gambia.
With the Mama Africa Museum and Art-Centre she wishes to contribute to safeguarding African Heritage, she want to tell the stories of Gambian women and hope to increase the appreciation of contemporary African art and female artists. The museum focuses on women’s contribution to society and how they shaped and will shape Gambian past, present and future, Mama Africa want to be a “Living Museum”. Guests can meet artists at work, enjoy local dancing, music and traditional dresses. The museum provides the opportunity to get in touch with female spiritual power and healing methods and to experience family life from the past to today. Together, paintings, sculptures and historical objects create the spirit of Mama Africa.
