It contains 160 of the author's colour photographs, covering a range of native and naturalized plants, with an emphasis on herbaceous species. A further 173 species are referred to in the text, but are not illustrated. The photographs are arranged by colour, whilst the accompanying text is organised family by family. The text is designed to be easy to understand. It highlights characters most useful for identification, such as the general appearance of the plant, leaf shape, flower structure, flowering period and type of fruit produced. English and local names are provided and there is also information on typical habitat distribution and ethnobotany. The use of botanical terminology has been minimized, although not at the expense of accuracy and a glossary is included. The book invites visitors to The Gambia, to discover more about the beautiful and interesting flowering plants that they will see about them. In addition, it is hoped that it will nurture interest in many Gambians, who are ultimately the guardians of the countryside.
